A Coat of Paint, A Neighborhood Changed

As children played on the sidewalks and peered through front door screens, a sea of grey shirted AmeriCorps climbed sometimes three-stories tall scaffolding to work on A Brush with Kindness exterior repairs in the Wellington Heights neighborhood. Members scraped and gave a fresh coat of paint to siding, replaced old gutters, repaired worn porches, and planted flowers after setting new retaining walls.

These neighborhood revitalization projects are in partnership with the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association, St. Pius X, Jessie Ball duPont Fund, Valspar, and several other area supporters.

"It is truly remarkable to see what a brush stroke of new paint can do; entire neighborhoods come together and can be transformed," said Jeff Capps, executive director at Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity. "You can get a real sense of community from projects like this and Habitat is so thankful to all of the sponsors and homeowners that have partnered with us on our first time out with A Brush with Kindness."

These homeowners and AmeriCorps members are invited to a special concert being held Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to continue the celebration of simple, decent, and affordable housing for everyone. The concert will be held at Cornell College in the Amplitheatre and all are welcome to attend.
