AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon: A Flood of Hope
The flood of hope brought to Cedar Rapids was the constant theme during the during the 2010 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon opening ceremony. Carol Gregory of Habitat for Humanity International looked out over the audience at Cornell College and said she was pleased to be in a "sea of blue" as over 500 AmeriCorps members wearing blue shirts attended the event. The 3 p.m. opening was also attended by Habitat for Humanity International, National Service and Cedar Valley Habitat staff, local sponsors and state supporters.
"Everything you do in service has a ripple effect," added Larry Gluth, vice president of Habitat's U.S. and Canada area office today as he rallied members for the week long Build-a-Thon which will include work on new construction of thirteen homes, three rehabs in the flood affected area, and A Brush with Kindness exterior repair projects.
In a poignant moment during the ceremony two Habitat homeowners from the 2009 Build-a-Thon project, Tricia and Stephen Fuller, said because of Habitat and their new home their lives are less like Dr. Pepper – satisfying only for a little while, and more like are like a pepper plant – a growing, living thing that has rooted and will be watered and cared for.
More families will get that chance to root and grow as the 2010 Build-a-Thon moves into full swing on Sunday.
