Construction Leaders and Volunteers Needed

CVHFH is actively working to complete 13 homes started during the AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon and for this to happen we will need continued community support for the rest of the summer. Our construction site is on the east side of Council Street immediately adjacent to the Robins Cemetery about one mile north of the intersection with Boyson Road. Our site operates Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8am-4pm.

We are especially in need of motivated individuals that are interested in taking a leadership role on the construction site at a commitment level of one day per week leading small teams on specific tasks using instructions provided by our construction manager. These assistant leaders should be comfortable with groups of 5-10 individuals, show a willingness to learn, and have a basic familiarity with construction, but do not need extensive construction experience, as we will provide training and daily instruction.

Interested individuals should contact our volunteer coodinator at Volunteer@CVHabitat.org or at 319.366.4485 to sign up!

Habitat Wins Partners in Sustainable Building Grant for 2011

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity has once again been selected to be part of the Home Depot Foundation sponsored Partners in Sustainable Building program for 2011. This is very exciting news in that the achievement of Energy Star status will mean additional funding for our houses next year. Building to the standards outlined by the Construction Technologies Department of Habitat International will mean addressing energy efficiency and water conservation and/or Indoor Air Quality and Durability in addition to energy efficiency.

Kurt and Brenda Warner Raise Walls with Habitat

With their 2010 Build-a-Thon shirts on and "Help Build It" nail aprons tied, by 8 a.m. Kurt and Brenda Warner were ready to go to work Friday, June 25. They lead a devotional for more than 80 people, including high school volunteers and local community leaders, before walls were raised on two more Habitat homes in northeast Cedar Rapids. Just a week previous, over 500 AmeriCorps volunteers were on the site, evidenced by eleven Habitat homes standing in the new neighborhood.

After a constructive morning, everyone met together under the large tents for a barbeque picnic by Dostal Catering. A brief program featured Kurt and Brenda receiving a plaque and hardhat signed by 2009 Habitat homeowners and Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett declaring June 25 First Things First Foundation Day. At closing, everyone signed a stud wall that will be part of one of our 2011 homes, signifying their commitment to Habitat and affordable housing.

Partners who rose to the Kurt Warner First Things First Challenge received certificates during the picnic. Those partners included the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors, Wells Fargo, Farmers State Bank, Beaton, Inc, and Quaker Oats. With several more groups working out details on their commitments, we’re well on our way to building more houses and serving more families in 2011!

For groups or organizations still interested in joining the Kurt Warner First Things First Challenge, please call Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity Program Manager Bea Flodeen at 319.389.1525.

Kurt and Brenda Warner Return to Cedar Rapids with a Habitat Community Challenge

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity and the Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation are inviting new Habitat pledge partners to a special Home Team build site picnic hosted by Kurt and Brenda on Friday, June 25, 2010 at noon. To demonstrate their commitment to joining in Habitat's work in 2011, Kurt Warner's First Things First Home Team Challenge participants will pledge to support at least one Habitat construction day next year.

As the Cedar Valley continues to rebuild from the Flood of 2008, Iowa natives Kurt and Brenda Warner are challenging Cedar Rapids faith‐based and corporate organizations to commit to building simple, decent and affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Warner’s First Things First foundation is making a generous gift of $100,000 to help complete two Habitat homes in 2010. They are calling on community‐minded individuals and groups to match their gift for 2011— making it possible to build at least one more Habitat home with an area family in need. As part of the program, partners will commit to at least an $8,000 one‐day "Front Door" sponsorship on the First Things First Foundation Habitat home in 2011. As part of that partnership, sponsors will have the opportunity to take part in team‐building days at a Habitat construction site.

"Habitat is doing great work in helping to rebuild affordable housing in this area," said Brenda Warner. Former Regis, UNI and NFL star quarterback Kurt Warner adds, "We're pleased to be a part of it. There is a long way to go in rebuilding this community, but we're hopeful that everyone will respond to our challenge and take a strong role in furthering this ministry."

In 2009, the Warners joined more than 400 Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members to help build 20 Habitat for Humanity houses, June 14–20, in Cedar Rapids, as part of the annual Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps Build‐a‐Thon. After receiving support from NFL colleagues and fans across the country, Kurt raised over $675,000 including $100,000 each from the Cardinals, NFL Charities, First Things First, and the Warners themselves. The 2010 build season will mark the second consecutive year Cedar Valley Habitat has been selected to host the annual Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps Build‐a‐Thon. More than 500 Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members will help build, rehabilitate, and repair Cedar Rapids‐area homes. Projects will continue throughout the rest of the summer.

"Through the great work of their foundation, as well as their strong personal commitment to this community and Habitat for Humanity, Kurt and Brenda have made an unbelievable difference," said Jeff Capps, Cedar Valley Habitat executive director. "Their contributions, which go far beyond their very generous financial support, are changing lives. We are so grateful, and confident that the community will respond to their challenge."

Partnership commitments, as part of the First Things First Home Team Challenge, are being accepted through Wednesday, June 23. Organizations and individuals interested in making a pledge should call Jeff Capps or Bea Flodeen at 319.366.4485 or e‐mail cvhhinfo@cvhabitat.org.
